Look beyond the advertised height

Two shoes with a similar heel height can feel different because the heel base, its placement, sole shape and upper all differ. A kitten heel, block heel and low pump are therefore candidates to compare, not interchangeable comfort categories.

Notice whether your weight feels comfortably supported or whether the foot slides toward a narrow front. A lower number cannot compensate for an unsuitable toe shape.

Assess the closure during movement

A slingback should remain positioned without excessive tightening, while a pump needs a topline that holds without pinching. If you grip with the toes or change your stride to keep the shoe on, another style may be a better starting point.

Use a short safe trial with ordinary turns and a pause. Do not attempt difficult balance tests to prove the heel is stable.

Choose for the actual occasion

Check the route, venue flooring and amount of standing. A wider heel base can be an option to consider, but it is not a guarantee on grass, gaps or uneven ground. If the approach requires different footwear, plan where to change.

Use the complete outfit setup

Try the intended hosiery and any relevant inserts before making the final choice. Persistent pressure should not be accepted as the normal cost of formal appearance. Select the pair whose fit and retention remain workable through the tasks you expect rather than relying on the words low heel as reassurance.
